Share whether unfamiliar words, losing a place or reading slowly makes assignments difficult. Ask which foundational reading skills the available tutor can support.

Understanding a word in context and connecting ideas across sentences can make a passage easier to follow.

Older students often need to identify a main idea, make an inference and choose evidence that actually supports their interpretation.
A LEARNING EXAMPLE
After a short passage, ask: “What happened, and which sentence helped you understand it?” A student might remember details but miss the main point, or give a sensible answer without finding supporting evidence.
These observations can make an inquiry more specific. They are not a diagnosis or a replacement for an appropriate reading assessment. You do not need to label the difficulty before asking for help.
Early assignments may emphasize accurate reading and understanding short texts. Later work asks students to compare ideas, interpret nonfiction and explain evidence. Include the grade and an example of the kind of reading involved, rather than assuming every student needs the same exercises.
If the main difficulty is turning understood ideas into a paragraph, writing tutoring may also be relevant.
