SAT Prep FAQs

Clear Answers Before You Start

What is the digital SAT and how is it structured?

The SAT is taken digitally in the College Board Bluebook app. It has two sections: Reading and Writing, followed by Math. Reading and Writing includes 54 questions in 64 minutes, while Math includes 44 questions in 70 minutes. Total testing time is 2 hours and 14 minutes, plus a 10-minute break. Each section has two modules, and the difficulty of the second module adjusts based on performance in the first.

What subjects and skills are tested on the SAT?

Reading and Writing measures comprehension, vocabulary in context, analysis, organization, grammar, and effective expression. Math covers algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry. Strong preparation should develop content knowledge as well as pacing, accuracy, question selection, and familiarity with the digital format.

What is considered a good SAT score?

SAT scores range from 400 to 1600, with Reading and Writing and Math each scored from 200 to 800. A good score depends on the student’s target colleges, programs, and scholarship goals. We recommend comparing a student’s baseline score with the middle 50% score range at their preferred schools, then setting a realistic improvement target.

How early should a student begin SAT preparation?

College Board recommends setting aside about two to three months for preparation. The right timeline depends on the starting score, target score, school workload, and test date. Beginning with a diagnostic test helps identify priority skills so study time can be focused where it will have the greatest impact.

How many times can a student take the SAT?

College Board does not limit how many times a student may take the SAT and recommends taking it at least twice, commonly in the spring of junior year and again in the fall of senior year. Many colleges consider a student’s highest score, and some superscore by combining the best section scores from different test dates. Students should still confirm the policy of each college.

Can students use a calculator on the digital SAT?

Yes. A calculator is allowed throughout the entire Math section. Bluebook includes a built-in Desmos calculator, and students may also bring an approved handheld calculator. Because calculator rules can change, students should confirm that their device meets the current College Board policy before test day.

How does MyHLC create a personalized SAT prep plan?

We begin with the student’s current performance, goals, timeline, and areas of difficulty. The plan then prioritizes the Reading and Writing and Math skills that need the most attention, while also developing pacing, test strategy, and confidence through guided practice and full-length practice tests. Progress is reviewed so instruction can be adjusted as the student improves.

What is the first step to get started?

Complete the short SAT plan form and tell us the student’s grade, goals, and expected test date. We will follow up to discuss the student’s needs, recommend appropriate next steps, and explain how personalized online SAT tutoring can fit their schedule.
