Clear Answers Before You Start
The SSAT is an independent-school admission test that measures verbal, math, and reading skills and includes a writing sample. Elementary Level is for students in grades 3–4, Middle Level for grades 5–7, and Upper Level for grades 8–11. We confirm the correct level before planning instruction.
Every level includes quantitative or math, verbal, reading, a writing sample, and an experimental section. Content and timing vary by level. The writing sample and experimental section are not scored, though schools receive the writing sample.
The right timeline depends on your child’s starting point, target schools, and test date. Many families begin 8–12 weeks before testing so there is time to diagnose gaps, build skills, practice pacing, and review without creating unnecessary pressure.
SSAT score ranges and percentiles vary by level. Score reports compare students with same-grade test takers in a competitive admission-testing population. The writing sample is not scored, but it is sent to selected schools, so clear organization and authentic writing still matter.
Testing limits depend on level and format. Middle and Upper Level students may take up to six Standard paper tests, one Flex test, one SSAT at Home, and two Prometric tests per testing year. Elementary students may take up to three paper tests, including two Standard tests and one Flex test.
On the Middle and Upper Level SSAT, one-quarter point is deducted for each incorrect answer, while omitted answers receive no deduction. Elementary Level has no penalty for incorrect answers. We teach a level-appropriate guessing and time-management strategy.
