Writing can feel difficult at different stages: getting an idea onto the page, organizing a paragraph or revising a draft that does not say what the student intended. MyHLC offers K–12 writing support in Shoreline and online. Share the assignment type and where the student gets stuck.

Understanding the prompt, choosing a main idea and making a simple outline can give a student a manageable place to begin.

A clear point needs relevant details and an explanation of how those details connect. Organization matters within a paragraph and across the whole piece.

Revision asks whether the ideas make sense. Editing checks sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and clarity. Students may need different support at each stage.
A LEARNING EXAMPLE
Consider a school paragraph arguing that a character was brave. Ask: What is the main point? Which action in the story supports it? How does that action show bravery?
Those questions help separate a claim from its evidence and explanation. They also give the student something concrete to revise without someone else rewriting the paragraph.
The purpose of tutoring should be to help the student make writing decisions independently. Share the teacher’s instructions and any rules about outside assistance. Ask how feedback will be given and how the student will do the planning, drafting and revision themselves.
When understanding the source text is the main obstacle, reading tutoring may be a useful starting point.
Ask the team which materials would be useful. An assignment prompt or teacher feedback can help explain the goal and the kind of assistance allowed.
Not necessarily. A discussion about priorities can distinguish an organization problem from a sentence-level issue. Ask how feedback would help the student apply a skill to the next assignment.
The service described here is educational support, not an essay-writing service. Students should produce and submit their own work according to their school’s rules.
